Manufacturing milestones, sustainability success, and new beginnings

Year in review 2023

In a year that witnessed the King’s coronation, Eurovision being held in the UK, and the announcement that the Earth’s ozone layer could recover in as little as 40 years’ time, we take a look back on 2023 at Daniels Healthcare and take a look forward to what’s in store for 2024.

Marching ahead

In March, a new hybrid production machine was installed at our manufacturing site in Littleborough as part of our investment in technology, supply chain security and sustainability.

The injection moulding machine produces the WIVA™ Infinity range of clinical waste containers – the world’s first UN-approved clinical waste container made from Post-Consumer Recycled Resin (PCR). The ability to produce these products in the UK remains a real boost for UK manufacturing and effectively removes the need for emissions-producing transportation from Europe.

With state-of-the-art energy efficient technology which delivers a quieter and faster cycle time, it is using 30% less energy than a standard, non-hybrid machine.

Sustainable, trusted and long-term

In June we shared how Daniels Healthcare uses PCR from locally sourced kerbside collections in the manufacture of our sustainable products.

Made from plastic waste generated by consumers in the north west, processed in the north west, and manufactured into new products in the north west, these repurposed containers save carbon, waste and money, and foster innovation.

In August, we celebrated 20 years of the SHARPSGUARD® name you know and trust. It was launched in 2003 as a successor to SHARPSBIN™, our very first sharps container.

This year we also congratulated Clinical & Sales Support Manager, Pete Williamson, on his 26th year with Daniels Healthcare.

Eventful autumn

September marked a significant milestone for the Infection Prevention Society (IPS), as it held its first sustainability conference. As a member of the IPS Sustainability Special Interest Group committee, Daniels Healthcare’s Steven Boyle, played a pivotal role in crafting the inaugural event which focussed on the route to net zero. Events like these serve as catalysts for progress and idea exchange across infection prevention teams, sustainability and waste managers, and NHS trusts across the UK.

We welcomed Anna McEwen, Business Development Manager, South East, to the Daniels Healthcare team in October. Anna brings 16 years of experience in the personal protective equipment and hygiene products sector, most recently working closely with hospital and theatre teams to provide the best product solutions for these highly specialist environments.

In November we shared the background and success of our partnership with our Irish partner Mediteq, one of Ireland’s leading healthcare distributors. Mediteq launched our innovative SHARPSGUARD® eco range containers, made from at least 40% recycled plastic, to Irish hospitals in January of this year, which is supporting the government in meeting its net zero commitments through reduced virgin plastic and carbon emissions.

In December, we said a huge thank you and goodbye to Head of Sales and Marketing for Mauser UK & Ireland, Kevin Cundy. Kevin has been with Daniels Healthcare since 2016 playing an integral role in business growth, sustainability progress and new product development.

What’s in store for 2024?

As we begin the new year, the team is working on the evolution one of our containers. Keep your eyes peeled for this ‘big’ news!

We are delighted to share the news that Steven Boyle has taken on a new role as Sales Director for Mauser UK Healthcare. Steven has been with Daniels Healthcare since 2017, leading the sales team and being the go-to person for our Scottish customers. He remains the key account manager for Scotland while taking on a broader, national role.

Finally, we also welcome Hugo Mellouli as Head of Sales. Hugo has recently joined Mauser and will lead healthcare container sales in Europe.

More to come from Hugo and Steven when we catch up with them this month about their new roles and plans for 2024.
