What Our Lid Colours Mean And Why They Are Important [Video]

All of our SHARPSGUARD® containers and lids are colour co-ordinated and for good reason. The kinds of waste that our customers need to dispose of are all very different and need to be handled differently. Our colour coded system ensures that the customer or person handling the Sharp knows exactly which container or bin to use. Please note that these colours and waste definitions relate to our customers in England and Wales:

Sam Millard (our South West England Sales Manager) demonstrates a quick colour guide for you:

  • Purple => for the disposal of Sharps including those contaminated with cytotoxic and/or cytostatic medicinal products and their residues (anything that changes the cell structure)
  • Yellow =>  for the disposal of Sharps contaminated with medicinal products and their residues (other than cytotoxic and/or cytostatic medicines)
  • Orange => for the disposal of Sharps, excluding those contaminated with medicinal products and their residues
  • Red => for the disposal of anatomical waste (part of our Speciality Range)
  • Blue => designed for the safe collection, transportation and disposal of solid medicinal waste in its original packaging e.g. pills in a blister pack (not cytotoxic or cytostatic)

If you have any questions about our containers, please contact our Customer Support team on 01865 371 841. If you are interested in changing your supplier of Sharps bins, please do give us a call and we’d be happy to help in managing the change-over. We provide our customers with a very comprehensive guide called “Making Sense of Change” which facilitates an efficient and precise changeover to prevent any injuries or confusion amongst staff.
